Homeschool or Preschool: Which is Best for Your Toddler?

Homeschool or Preschool: Which is Best for Your Toddler?

Being a parent, you are faced with decisions from the moment you realize that a child is on the way. When you have a baby, you will need to decide on whether or not your kid will be taught at home or should be enrolled in a preschool. These days, such decisions need to be made as early as possible since more and more quality schools require parents to reserve and interview for the limited slots each school has way before a child is ready for it.

If you decide to homeschool, then you don’t have to worry about whether or not your child is prequalified for the best preschool in the neighborhood. If you do decide to enroll your kid in one of these educational institutions, you should decide before your son or daughter is a toddler and is ready for such a milestone. This puts a lot of pressure on parents, which is why some decide to homeschool instead.

Now comes the question, is homeschooling something you should consider for your kids or should you aim for a preschool for them instead? How do you make that choice without giving yourself a headache from it? To help you make an educated decision, let us check out what the general consensus is when it comes to both these options.

Home Schooling – this is a choice that parents who have pre-kindergarten children can opt for, and is one that most stay-at-home parents, as well as those who have telecommuting jobs, can choose. This method of educating toddlers is similar to what was done in the old days, where parents and grandparents taught kids the basics like colors, letters, numbers, and shapes.

This does not require benchmarks, grades, or educational standards, unlike preschool. This also gives parents the chance to bond with their kids in activities that teach them the building blocks to education.

Pre-School – this is usually an alternative to day care, and is chosen by those who believe their kids should get a head start towards that graduation gown and cap in the future. This is also chosen by homes where both parents have to go to work and there is no one else to look after their toddler.

There are many different kinds of programs for pre-school, depending on the institution that the child goes to. Some keep the kids in the facility for an entire day, with meals, naps, and other activities integrated into the program along with learning and socializing. Others offer only half-day classes, with recess, playtime, and naps being part of the activities. Whichever is chosen, these institutions offer kids the opportunity to get used to standardized learning and to socialize with others.

So, which one is best for your toddler? The choice is actually dependent on you, as a parent. The factors that come into play when you make a decision include financial capabilities, time, energy, and personal preference. Sometimes, you don’t have the time to teach your kid at home due to work so you choose preschool. Or you may find the institutions near you are too costly, so you opt to teach your kid yourself. In reality, there is no right or wrong choice here. What you choose is really dependent on your situation and your preference.

Suffice to say, the quest for that diploma, graduation frock, and graduation cap does not need to start in earnest when your child is 2 or 3. They can do that when they are at an age where learning with others and being away from you is no longer difficult for them. What is wrong however is neglecting to have them learn enough by the time they are ready for school, and this can be easily done by homeschooling them or by enrolling them in a preschool near you.
